Abisko National Park
The park offers several places worth seeing,
the most spectacular being the Abisko Canyon. Here the Abisko
River has buried itself deep down at the bottom and formed 20
m high walls. Abisko is particularly well known for its mountain
flora that includes such flowers as very rare orchids in the
park. Abisko is popular among ornithologists; here some years
it is possible to observe the rare little north warbler.
Mount Nuolja
Mount Nuolja lies west of Abisko; part of it is within the Abisko National
Park. Its location makes it very accessible, and there is a chair-lift that
will take you to the top both winter and summer. One of the natural paths runs
alongside the Abisko River, ravines and up over the mountain slope. From the
mountain you can see the midnight sun from 27 May to 18 July. The view from
there across lake Torneträsk and the surrounding mountain is truly magnificent,
with Lapporten, the well known U-valley to the southeast and the high mountain
massif to the south and west.
