Touring on your own
Few places in Sweden have nature as easily accessible as in Abisko.
Varying types of mountain environments are right next to the mountain
station. Moors, thick birch forests and bare mountain regions are
within reach for shorter hikes. Try and discover the nature. Here
are some examples of various tours. Some are short, some are a little
longer. All the tours are for you who want to roam around the mountains
alone or together with friends.
Marmorbrottet quarry and Lake Njakajaure nature path
Follow the Royal Trail two kilometers to the Marmorbrott quarry.
The gold-white cliffs are comprised of limestone dolomite. Up on
the cliffs, continue to the left into the Lake Njakajaure nature
trail, which goes through various types of nature. Black-throated
diver breed in Lake Njakajaure and arctic tern often fly over the
surface of the water. There are isolated clumps of pine around the
lake. The trail back to Abisko occasionally goes over open mountain
moors with constant frost. Lapland rosebay, white dryas and orchids
grow on these moors.
Abiskojåkkas river canyon
Walk under the railway and along the road up to the tramway. Stop
by the bridge and choose between walking up or downstream. The graveled
path under the railway and the E10 highway lead to the most beautiful
section of the canyon. Dippers breed here. Flowers, lava and moss
grow in an abundance on the walls of hard shale and dolomite in the
canyon.
Kårsafallen waterfall
Follow the trail towards the Kårsavagge Valley over the Röda
bridge. The path splits after 600 metres, continue to walk parallel
with the Abiskojåkka river. The path here goes through a park-like
birch forest and then on footbridges over swampy ground. Stately
pine trees gradually show themselves through the forest and a sparse
primeval pine forest appears near the Kårsajåkka river.
Capercaillie and squirrels are found here. Many nice small waterfalls
are along Kårsajåkka river from the bridge and upwards.
Rihtunjira nature path
Follow the Kårsavagge valley trail to the Rihtunjira river.
Here, the nature path branches off and follows the river upstream
through a partially blooming birch forest. Higher up, the stream
forms a series of waterfalls. The path crosses the river higher above
the tree line and you come up to flowering moors and meadows. The
abundance of flora depends on the lime in the ground. The path goes
under the tramway and then steeply turns off upwards towards the
mountain station. Stop at the mountain station and enjoy the view
before heading down again.
Nissunjåkka river suspension bridge
Follow the Royal Trail four kilometers to the suspension bridge.
At this section, the Royal Trail is easy walking and varying. Almost
one kilometer after the Marmorbrott quarry, the trail goes down an
edge and over a small bridge. From here, you can see traces in the
ground from several of the Nissunjåkka river’s older
reaches. The ground is submerged throughout the year by strong spring
floods. A rest spot with a lean-to and fireplace are on the other
side of the suspension bridge |
